60 Amp Breaker Wire. The other issue is the color index white being used as a power leg. When the amperage increases the width of the wire needs to be larger to conduct more electricity.
How i wired a 60 amp breaker and a 240v outlet for a welder brought to you by desert rat 2000. For 50 amps the rule of thumb is that you need a 6 gauge wire size. 80 of breaker max single phase breaker size wire size based on copper thhn wire increase one size when using aluminum conductors at 115 volts at 230 volts 15 amp 14 1 380 2 760 20 amp 12 1 840 3 680 30 amp 10 seldom used on 115 voltage 5 520 40 amp 8 seldom used on 115 voltage 7 360 50 amp 6 seldom used on 115 voltage 9 200 60.
Several things should be verified by what i m seeing in this photo the wire size does not look to adequate for a 60 amp breaker it looks to be 10awg or 8awg it should be 6awg or sometimes local codes will allow 8 stranded check your local codes if none use the national electric code.
That would be 4 gauge wire. A 60 amp panel controlling several circuits could easily draw a maximum of 60 amps before the subpanel breaker trips. For 50 amps the rule of thumb is that you need a 6 gauge wire size. If you re installing a 60 amp subpanel however it s best to connect it to the main panel with 4 gauge wire.
