The circuit of a simple lm338 solar battery charger is shown below using the ic lm338. Thus the maximum input range is 4 95v to the 32v for both solar and adapter. As you see in the connection diagram at first the solar panel is connected to the solar charge controller and then a 24v battery is connected to the charge controller.
In a shunt mode circuit the solar panel is permanently connected to the battery via a series diode.
