Water Phase Diagram Critical Point. For water critical point will have pressure value 217 75 atm and temperature value 373 99 0 c. Figures 1 and 2 show two dimensional projections of a phase diagram in the pressure temperature phase diagram fig.
By international agreement the triple point of water has been assigned a value of 273 16 k 0 01 c. At high pressures water has a complex phase diagram with 15 known phases of ice and several triple points including 10 whose coordinates are shown in the diagram. 1 the boiling curve separates the gas and liquid region and ends in the critical point where the liquid and gas phases disappear to become a single supercritical phase.
What does that mean.
The liquid liquid critical point of a solution which occurs at the critical solution temperature occurs at the limit of the two phase region of the phase diagram in other words it is the point at which an infinitesimal change in some thermodynamic variable such as temperature or pressure leads to separation of the mixture into two distinct liquid phases as shown in the polymer. Critical point is a point beyond which liquid phase will not exist and there will be only vapour phase beyond the critical point. The critical point on the phase diagram shows where the gas and liquid states of a liquid are identical and the substance is in one phase. The water molecules are actually closer together in the liquid phase than they are in the solid phase.
