H Bridge Configuration. An h bridge is an electronic circuit that switches the polarity of a voltage applied to a load. An h bridge is used to control the direction of the motor and to also provide enough current for the motor to run.

In order to bias these mosfets in the active region a voltage must be applied to the gate that meets the v gs th value as specified in that particular mosfets data sheet. In a typical h bridge configuration as shown in figure 2 there are two high side mosfets each located on opposite sides of the bridge. The switching elements q1 q4 are usually bi polar or fet transistors in some high voltage applications igbts.

To force a motor to switch in two directions one requires a minimum of 4 switching elements.
